This is my story (dramatic pause).

Hi, I’m Humaira and I’m from Manchester. That’s in the UK, for those of you that don’t know. I’m a freelance writer for hire over at and am also an English Literature graduate. My favourite colour is lilac and I won a poetry competition in year 2. Now that’s the important stuff sorted, let’s get stuck right in.

I graduated in the Summer of 2018 and worked in retail for a couple of years. Working in retail was always supposed to be temporary for me, however, I got a little comfortable — hence why I ended up staying for…

I have a degree in English Literature. I’m a freelance writer. With the two combined, you’d think I would know how to spell, right?

That red squiggly line has become my best friend. You know what I’m talking about — the one that appears when you misspell something.

If I misspell anything, it’s there to save the day. Why even make an effort to spell anymore? I don’t want to put Red Squiggle out of a job.

Funnily enough, it used to appear when I wrote down my name. But we’ve gotten past those days now — it doesn’t…

Starting from today — Monday 12th April 2021.

(This is a great way for you to indirectly donate and help those in need, too. All you have to do is read my stories.)

Tonight officially marks the start of Ramadan this year. Ramadan is a holy month where Muslims all around the world fast from dawn to dusk.

Fasting is 1 of the 5 Pillars of Islam, meaning it is a religious duty that allows Muslims to become closer to God and identify with the poor and needy.

Ramadan is a holy month that Muslims look forward to all year round. The blessed month is filled with endless…

Even if I didn’t realise it at the time.

Back story: I failed multiple times.

Being told I had failed was awful each time. That horrible feeling, the whole situation — I cried in the car almost every time. It was awful.

I remember my first test. I was driving downhill, and an ambulance was coming uphill. It didn’t have its siren on. I still pulled into the side to let the ambulance pass. Apparently, I didn’t pay attention to the parked car in front when turning in (I know I didn’t). My examiner had to hit the brakes.

And that’s it — that’s how I failed my first…

I finally made money writing on Medium. Woohoo. Praise be to God.

Okay, so I know I’m not included in the small percentage of writers making ‘real’ money here, but I can now say I’ve officially made some money on Medium. And that $0.16 is a start!

Some of the best advice I’ve received about making money on Medium is to follow people and interact with their content — but don’t just clap; you have to actually read other people’s stories. Highlight things you’re interested in and respond to stories. If you thought someone shared useful advice, tell them. If you were touched or moved by a story, let the author know.

Please keep my grandma and my family in your prayers

I haven’t posted anything here in 2 days.

My grandma passed away.

A Journal Entry

I’m halfway through my fundraising challenge. I really want to earn a lot more, God willing. I’m going to have to keep writing and keep sharing stories.

I’m tired. I should really go to sleep. But at the same time, I want to be able to share as many stories as possible, so I can raise as much money as possible, which can then be donated. But surely there have to be some boundaries? Then again, I didn’t post anything at all yesterday so I should probably play catch up and post whatever I can right now. Yes, it’s true…

It’s the first post day I’ve missed in 2 weeks

I didn’t post anything yesterday. I didn’t start a new draft; I didn’t write anything, I didn’t submit anything to a publication — I didn’t post anything.

It’s the first post day I’ve missed in 2 weeks.

In case you didn’t know, I’m donating my Medium earnings to charity this Ramadan. Of course, I want to raise as much money as possible and am, therefore, trying to publish as many stories as I can.

But I missed a post day. I’m around halfway into the challenge and I’ve been posting a story on Medium every single day. …

Seriously, they don’t hold that power

Source: Amanda Jones from Unsplash

You are the one that gets to decide how you feel about yourself. Only you possess that power. If someone comes along and says something rude or embarrasses you, that’s not a reflection of you. It’s a reflection of them. It’s all them.

Similarly, if someone comes along and makes you feel stupid for not knowing something, it doesn’t make you stupid. Someone saying something rude to you doesn’t mean it’s true.

That’s it. It’s as simple as that.

Other people don’t have the power to decide how you feel about yourself. Only you possess that power.

Disclaimer: I’m yet to make $1 from a single piece. By no means am I a high earner on Medium, I’m simply sharing the factors of my highest earning stories so far.

The Analysis

My 3 highest-earning stories on Medium are either:

  • Humour pieces (always respectful, of course. I don’t mock anyone or their beliefs and never write to offend)
  • About Medium

Of course, I can’t say everyone on Medium likes having a laugh and reading about Medium but my readers do, apparently.

Below are my highest earning stories as of 26th April 2021. (The top 3 fluctuate between themselves every day.)
